New Yorkers React to Derek Chauvin Verdict

NEW YORK, NY – APRIL 21: The speaker is Samy Feliz, the brother of Allan Feliz who was shot dead by Sgt. Jonathan Rivera of the NYPD on October 17, 2019 on Bainbridge Avenue in the Norwood section of the borough of the Bronx. As of 2021 the family of Allan Feliz seeks "justice" against the officer. NY state Attorney General Letitia James did not file charges against officer Rivera for fatally shooting Feliz during a traffic stop. "Based on witness accounts, considerable video evidence and an exhaustive review of the facts, the use of deadly force could not be proven to be unjustified beyond a reasonable doubt, as the legal standard requires,” said James. Organized by Make the Road New York: A rally is held at Foley Square in downtown Manhattan a day after the verdict of the Derek Chauvin trial on April 21, 2021. Former police officer Derek Chauvin was on trial for second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges in the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. Chauvin guilty on all three charges. The former officer is on video kneeling on Floyd's neck for nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds. Floyd’s death sparked nationwide protests in 2020. Among the remembered victims of police brutality honored are: Ma'Khia Bryant, Allan Feliz, Adam Toledo, Duante Write, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Sean Monterrosa, Eric Garner, Amadou Diallo, Kawaski Trawick and others who the crowd chanted by name.
