Kashimiri residents await the power-shovel removing the rocks on the road in Sanghar, some eight kilometres north of Balakot, 18 October 2005. The Pakistani army tore through landslides to reopen earthquake-ravaged roads to remote towns and villages in the north and in Kashmir, which have been cut off from supplies by land for 10 days. Helicopters, trucks and donkeys have struggled to get enough tents, blankets and food to cold and hungry survivors since a 7.6-magnitude quake tore through Pakistani and Indian Kashmir and northern Pakistan, killing at least 41,000 and leaving some 3.3 million people homeless.
