Senator Cruz press statement on faith of judicial nominees
Texas Senator Ted Cruz of the Senate Judiciary Committee says at a news conference with fellow Republicans supporting Notre Dame Law Professor Amy Coney Barrett to sit on the federal bench that there was a time when the Blaine amendments were adopted explicitly to bar Catholics from office, to erect legal barriers and a reemergence of that same hostility to faith in the Catholic Church had emerged. Cruz says questions about evangelical Christian beliefs, views on salvation have no place in a Senate hearing, that if Democrats have a message to Catholics to not apply if they are Orthodox there is an opportunity to vote on nominees, asking if they are establishing and unconstitutional religious test contrary to Article 6 of the Constitution.
