David Cameron and Nick Clegg meet charity workers

David Cameron and Nick Clegg meet charity workers; Nick Clegg MP (Lib Dem Deputy PM) speaking SOT - What I've been discovering is that we've been using different words for a long time and actually meaning the same thing - Liberalism - big society, empowerment - responsibility: it means the same thing - what we are grappling with is nothing less than a huge cultural shift of people in their everyday lives, in their workplace, in their communities, their homes, on their street, don't always turn to answers from officialdom, locl authorities, govt, because they feel free and empowered to help themselves in their local communities - a wonderful man who lives on a difficult housing estate in Sheffield, blighted with problems these big estates have, social breakdown, drug abuse - this chap was Italian who married local girl, moved into estate and basically started cleaning up the place: children started joining him / he became latter day Pied Piper and after a while all the children followed him / now he's single handedly done things not a single govt programme managed to do - reinstall pride in the estate and provide role model to children who weren't receiving a role model / I always think of his bloody-minded, almost eccentric, desire not to accept the way things are is exactly the cultural empowerment of the big society we want to install - delighted to welcome you here today (fast out)
