World Heritage In Ukraine Is Under Constant Threat Of Destruction Due To Russian Shelling
KYIV, UKRAINE - AUGUST 3: (AUDIO OMITTED) A cross crowns a wooden dome of Refectory of St. John the Divine located on the territory of St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery in the historic center on August 3, 2023 in Kyiv, Ukraine. As a result of the Russian shelling on July 23, several cultural buildings were damaged in the center of Odesa, where the World Heritage site “Historic Centre of Odesa” is located. Under an emergency procedure in January 2023, UNESCO added it to both the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger. UNESCO also recommends including Saint Sophia Cathedral, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the historic center of Lviv to the List of World Heritage in Danger. UNESCO recorded a total of 2.5 billion dollars in damages to cultural heritage in Ukraine, but this figure is predicted to rise to 7 billion over the next 10 years.
