Thousands of enslaved persons fought alongside the British in the American Revolution in return for freedom. Many Black Loyalists relocated in Shelburne County and Birchtown, which became the largest community of free black people in North America.Recently the town went semi-viral on social media for hosting the annual Nova Scotia Giant Pumpkin Festival & Regatta (during Thanksgiving weekend)
