New Caledonia /Nouvelle-Calédonie - stock photo

The kagu or cagou (Rhynochetos jubatus) is a crested, long-legged, and bluish-grey bird endemic to New Caledonia. It is the only surviving member of the genus Rhynochetos and the family Rhynochetidae. New Caledonia is an ancient fragment of Gondwana, the southern supercontinent. It separated from Australia 85 million years ago and it has been islolated from other land masses since then. New Caledonia's fauna and flora derive from ancestral species, many tens of millions of years ago.
