Graveyard for old whaling community - stock photo

Deception Bay, an island in South Shetland off of the Antarctic Peninsula was home to a whaling station. One of the safest harbors in Antarctica, the island is also home to an active volcano which has destroyed the many attempts of building permanent structures there. 45 men were buried at the station's cemetery, which was also buried by a volcanic eruption in 1969
