Bourtange is a fortified village with a special history. The fortifications consist of a pentagon in which the village is built. This is special in the Netherlands. The reason for this construction is simple. The shape of the moats and walls were the safest way to protect the village. In which the water from the surrounding swamp played an important role. The fortress from 1742 has been completely restored in recent decades.
