Immigrant Mother And Family Suffer With COVID-19 As Teacher Cares For Their Healthy Newborn

STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT - JUNE 17: Zully calls her Covid-sick mother Aurora on June 17, 2020 in Stamford, Connecticut. Aurora, who lives in Guatemala, became ill with Coronavirus more than 2 months after Zully and her family survived Covid-19 in Connecticut. On April 1 Zully, then almost 8 months pregnant, was hospitalized for Covid-19 at Stamford Hospital, where she was intubated and given an emergency C-section. Baby Neysel was born healthy but could not join his father Marvin and brother Junior, as they were both Covid positive and quarantined at home. The baby stayed for six weeks in the care of Luciana Lira, Junior's K-5 Bilingual /ESL instructor, until the family recovered and tested Covid-negative. After more than three weeks in a coma at the hospital ICU, Zully responded to experimental antibody blood plasma transfusions and was able to return home. A GoFundMe campaign raised $53,832 for the Guatemalan immigrant family, who has also been assisted by the Stamford non-profit Building One Community. (Photo by John Moore/Getty Images)
