Unemployed disc jockey and chat show host Simon Dee makes friends with Mary Ellen, a cockatoo perched on the shoulder of pet shop manager Keith Tickner, Richmond, Surrey, 17th December 1970. Having heard that Dee had fallen on hard times, the proprietor of the shop, decided to help by offering Dee a ?25 fee to officially open the shop.
