Nagorno-Karabakh (NKR) Defense Army Continues Training For Conflict Against Azerbaijan

AGDAM REGION, NAGORNO-KARABAKH - MAY 5: Two soldiers from the 8th regiment of the NKR Defense Army run out of their bunker to take position against Azeri snipers May 5, 2004 in the Agdam region of Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed region that is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. The first soldier carries an unloaded RPG, while the second soldier is holding an AK-74. Azeri snipers often shoot at Karabasti positions only a few hundred yards away, sometimes hitting their target. Nagorno-Karabakh is a fertile, mountainous area of 4,400 square kilometers in the southern Caucasus situated inside what is internationally recognized as Azerbaijan. The name, a Russian-Turkish-Persian compound, shows the region's complex history and means "Mountainous Black Garden." The Karabakh Armenians call the region Artsakh or "Strong Forest." Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave, which is largely Armenian populated. (Photo by Jonathan Alpeyrie/Getty Images)
