This photo taken in Soweto on June 14, 2021 shows a general view of the Hector Pieterson memorial site with a fountain and the iconic photograph taken by photographer Sam Nzima of Hector Pieterson's body being carried by Mbuyisa Makhubo and his sister, Antoinette, taken on June 16, 1976. On June 16, 1976, students protested against the apartheid government's Bantu education policy, and their decision to enforce Afrikaans as language of instruction in black schools. The protest ended in violence when the police opened fire on teenagers and children. The first two children who were killed, were just 12 years old, one of them being Hector Pieterson. 2021 is the 45th anniversary of this historic protest, which showed to the world the brutality of the apartheid government.
