During the 1998-1999 independence war, Adem Jashari, a founding KLA commander, was killed along with most of his family by Serbian forces. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008, following NATO's intervention in March 1999 to remove Serbian forces. As Europe's newest country, Kosovo is recognized by 108 UN member states, though it is not recognized by Serbia and Russia. As Russia assumes the UN Security Council presidency in October 2025, Moscow leverages its alliance with Serbia to challenge Kosovo's independence and assert influence across the region.
