GERNIKA, BASQUE COUNTRY, SPAIN - JANUARY 31: The daughter of Constantino Fernandez, prisoner who died in the Hospital, Begoña Fernandez, the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martinez, the Mayor of Gernika, Jose Maria Gorroño, and the Director of the Institute of Memory, Coexistence and Human Rights-Gogora, Alberto Alonso, during the act of declaring the former Military Hospital for prisoners of war a place of memory, at the Secondary School that housed the Hospital between 1938 and 1940, IES Gernika BHI, on 31 January, 2025 in Gernika, Basque Country, Spain. Today a panel is placed in front of the Secondary School, which housed the Prisoners of War Hospital of Gernika between 1938 and 1940, marking it as a 'Place of Memory'. It is an initiative of the Pipergorri Cultural Association of Gernika with the support of the Institute of Memory, Coexistence and Human Rights-Gogora, the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory and the City Council of Gernika.
