The Admiral Graf Spee's rangefinder is r
MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY: The Admiral Graf Spee's rangefinder is raised from seabed 25 February, 2004 some 4 nautical miles (8 km) from the port of Montevideo, Uruguay. An expedition led by Uruguayan diver Hector Bado finally succeeded, after a first failed attempt on 09 February, to recover the piece from the wreck of the pocket German battleship, scuttled by her own crew on 17 December, 1939 after having been crippled in a fierce battle with three British cruisers in front of the port of Punta del Este, 140 km east of Montevideo. The operation to recover the rangefinder, originally weighing 27 tons, it's part of a more ambitious plan to refloat the entire ship.
