Students from the University of Western Cape protest at the campus against the execution by hanging of two men, Mnyanda Moses Jantjies (22) and Mlamli Wellington Mielies (27), on August 1, 1987 in Cape Town. The two men had been hanged for the killing of a black council member and his four sons during sustained anti-apartheid violence in South Africa's black townships in 1985. The executions were the first to be carried out against 32 prisoners condemned to death for killings committed during two years of turmoil and resistance that began in September 1984 in the country's black townships. The executions went ahead in Pretoria despite appeals for clemency from the West German Government, Anglican Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu and the mothers of the convicted men.
