Rare Variety Of Black Rice, Oryza Sativa Sold In North East India
IMPHAL, MANIPUR, INDIA - MARCH 17: A stallholder displays and sells rice in a marketplace on March 17, 2018 in Imphal, Manipur, India. In this northeastern tip of India in the state of Manipur locals grow a rare variety of rice whose grains are black in colour rather than standard white. Local tribal women sell this variety from bamboo baskets in the Ima Market in Imphal. This variety of Oryza sativa has medicinal and higher nutritive values as compared to polished white rice. When cooked as a delicacy with milk and sugar the pudding becomes purplish in colour. Locals say this variety can withstand climate change. The paddy plant looks very similar but the grains are back due to presence of anthocyanins. Mostly the tribes of the region grow this black rice variety.
