Staff Photo by Gordon Chibroski, Wednesday, May 2, 2001: Michael Wingfield and Jeff Howe enjoy playing a Cuban percussion piece using shekeres that are made from the Calabash gourd and beads. They are two of the four member Cuban band they named "Cabildo" in honor of the former slaves who were freed in Cuba. The freed slaves formed different ethnic groups according to their African backgrounds that were called cabildos. They were outside the Center for Cultural Exchange at the corner of Congress and State Street waiting to perform after the slide show presented by photographer, Marta Morse. The Center for Cultural Exchange hosted an evening of images, sounds and traditional culinary delights from contemporary Cuba. The event featured a slide presentation of recent trips to Cuba by photographer Marta Morse, a tribute to Babalu Aye by percussionist Michael Wingfield and his band called Cabildo, a light Cuban fare by Grapevine Catering and an informal discussion and information sharing on the Cuban experience.
