Quindio Farmers Work Amid Strike Blockades
CIRCASIA, COLOMBIA - MAY 24: Richard Hurtado poses for a photo on May 24, 2021 in Circasia, Colombia. Hurtado is a retired policeman who owns a farm, he produces eggs, bananas, has calves and pigs. He has faced a crisis due to the blockades since getting food for the animals has been complicated, Richard even considered to sacrifice his hens after many of them started to weaken. Farmers of the Quindio region struggle as protests against Ivan Duque's administration have not stopped since erupting on April 28 against a tax reform bill which was later withdrawn. The national strike and blockades designed to put pressure on the government are also undermining the work of local plantane, coffee and milk producers. As the agricultural sector counts nearly u$s 500,000 lost, farmers started trying to transport their own production, lowering prices and even producing cheese from their milk to avoid it's expiration.
