(Original Caption) Rear Admiral Lewis L. Strauss, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, gestures as he holds his first press conference since taking office fourteen months ago. During an hour long meeting with newsmen in Washington, September 9th, Strauss expressed hope for a speedy agreement on President Eisenhower's Atoms-For-Peace proposals. Regarding the Commission's primary task, the development and production of nuclear weapons, he reported "satisfying progress." He said the nation's stockpile contains "more weapons today by a wide margin than it did a year ago."
