President Eisenhower Looking at a Model Statue of Liberty
(Original Caption) President Eisenhower (left) lent his offices to a fund-raising job to erect an American Museum of Immigration at the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. The President examines a model of the statue which served as the "original sketch" for the famous symbol of American freedom, by the French sculptor August Bartholdi, which was brought to the White House by members of the Museum National Committee. Looking are Anna L. Strauss, former President of the league of women voters, and Spyros P. Skouras, President of 20th Century Fox Film Corporation. Under construction for the past two years, the museum will be built in the statue's pedestal.
