Popi Rani Das

TORONTO, ON - DECEMBER 6: Popi and her mother Anjata Das shopping at Dollarama. In September, 2010, in her hometown in Bangladesh, Popi Rani Das took ill to her bed. Her husband gave her a glass of water to drink. It was not a glass of water, but a glass of acid, which burned away two-thirds of her esophagus, some of her trachea and most of her stomach. She was 21 years old. Former Star reporter Marina Jiminez wrote about Popi's story in April 2016. She was with Dr. Toni Zhong who promised Popi that she would do everything in her power to get her to Toronto to have her esophagus and stomach repaired at Toronto General Hospital. Zhong kept her promise. We meet up with Popi to hear how her life has changed since surgery. We speak to her medical team, including Dr. Ralph Gilbert who used skin from Popi's arm to create an esophagus and her intestine to create a new stomach.
