Picture of an angel?s image in the decoration of the Jesuit Missions' church in San Javier, Chiquitos, Bolivia, some 220 km from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, on December 1st, 2007. San Javier's baroque-style Jesuit church -built between 1749 and 1752, and restored between 1987 and 1993- is part of the first missions founded by the Jesuits in 1691. The Jesuit Missions in the territories of what is now Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Bolivia and Uruguay, were intended to "civilise" and bring the Roman Catholic religion to the native tribes of the region, in a way of protecting them from the slave trade and the cruel exploitation and possible annihilation by representatives of the Spanish and Portuguese Crowns.
