Ataturk Airport in Istanbul
ISTANBUL, TURKEY - MARCH 22: People wait in queue to complete check-in processes Ataturk Airport, which is planned to be closed for commercial flights after transference period to Istanbul Airport had been completed, in Istanbul, Turkey on March 22, 2019. Ataturk Airport, which is short of 24 km from the city center, was used for international charter flights for years after coming into service for military purposes in 1912 in Yesilkoy. Civil aviations started in Yesilkoy Airfield in 1933 between Istanbul-Ankara after the military hangar and masonry were assigned to civil aviation. The airport was decided to be an international airport with the purpose of development of Turkish civil aviation with Convention on International Civil Aviation, which was sign on 1944 in Chicago. Construction of the airport had started in 1949 and was completed in 1953 and started its international flights.
