UNITED KINGDOM - NOVEMBER 28: 'People Of The Future In The Home Of The Future', 1956 A photograph of a curious crowd of people looking at 'Mr and Mrs 1980' in the House of the Future, an exhibit at the Ideal Home Exhibition. Designed by architects Alison (1928-1993) and Peter Smithson (1928-), the House of the Future imagined how homes would be in the hi-tech 1980s. The furniture and fittings were made from new materials which had become available since the war, such as moulded plastics, stainless steel and fibreglass. The Ideal Home Exhibition first opened at Olympia, London, in 1908. It showcased the latest houses and products to transform people's lifestyles.
