When it began in 1959 at Daytona International Speedway, the race was called the Firecracker 250. It became the Firecracker 400 in 1963 and was later renamed the Pepsi Firecracker 400 in 1985. Since 1989 the race has been known as the Pepsi 400. Between 1959 and 1987 the race was always scheduled for July 4, regardless of the day of the week.
