"Star City" Cosmonaut Training Center
On 11 January 1960, it was decided to create a training center for Russian cosmonauts in the suburbs of Moscow, close to the Tchkalov aerodrome, in a former military base in the middle of a forest. After the first Soviet flights the center was baptized "Star City" or "Zviezdni Gorodok". It housed more than 5000 inhabitants, and the city was divided into two sectors, the section where active and retired cosmonauts lived (pictured) and the training and preparation center of CPK cosmonauts. All Russian, and even foreigner, astonauts were trained here from 1976. The USSR used Baikonour, in Kazakhstan as the sole launch site. The control center, named TSOUP, is situated in Kalingrad, the north of Moscow. (Photo by Eric Préau/Sygma via Getty Images)
