Maria Gonzalez, a supporter of a defeate
Mexico City, MEXICO: Maria Gonzalez, a supporter of a defeated Mexican leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, holds a poster referring to the vote recount during the blockade of Paseo de la Reforma, the major road that bisects Mexico City into north and south, on July 31st, 2006. Supporters of Lopez Obrador have been blocking since yesterday major arteries in the heart of the Mexican capital and vowed to hold their ground until the electoral court orders a vote recount. Yesterday, the defeated candidate rallied more than one million supporters at El Zocalo square to denounce alleged election fraud for his narrow defeat and calling for a vote-by-vote recount of the 41.7 million ballots cast in the July 2 election. The electoral court, which has the power to call a partial or a full vote recount, must declare the official victor in the poll by September 6.
