COLOMBIA-MUSEUM-MUMMIES-SAN BERNARDO
Local resident Clovisnerys Bejarano visits her mother Saturnina Torres, who died in 1993 and was exhumed in 2001, and now rests in the museum of mummies at the Jose Arquimedes Castro mausoleum, located at the cemetery in San Bernardo municipality, Cundinamarca department, Colombia on April 10, 2024. Clovisnerys Bejarano kneels to pray in front of the body of his mother, Saturnina, who died almost 30 years ago but whose facial features are preserved thanks to a mysterious mummification process that happens "spontaneously" in the Colombian town of San Bernardo. "For us as Sanbernardinos (mummification) has become our daily bread", explains Rocio Vergara, the person in charge of the exhibit where the bodies of Saturnina and 13 other people who also escaped decomposition for reasons not yet explained are on display. Some of them still have their eyes and fingernails. (Photo by Raul ARBOLEDA / AFP) (Photo by RAUL ARBOLEDA/AFP via Getty Images)
