The women's horse race was a centrepiece of a festival celebrating the skills of the region's nomads in the remote village of Gharah Ghayah, tucked away in the lush moutains of northwestern Iran. Nomads in this remote area, just 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the border with the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan, are ethnic Azeris, who form a majority in this province and speak a Turkic language as their mother toungue.
