(FILES) A crater marks the site of the first Indian underground nuclear test conducted 18 May 1974 at Pokhran in the desert state of Rajasthan. After a gap of twenty-four years, India carried out another series of five underground nuclear explosion on 11 and 13 May 1998, provoking criticism from many countries around the world. A government statement said the 13 May tests "completed the planned series" which began in the desert range of Pokhran near the Pakistani border on 11 May 1998.
