Ceylon Circa 1920
Ceylon. Built by King Tissa about 307 B.C. to contain the collar-bone of Buddha, the Thuparama is one of the eight sacred places at Anuradhapura. The dagoba, 63 feet high and 40 in diameter, stands on a platform reached by stone steps; slender monoliths with carved capitals surround it', c1920. Thuparama is the earliest historical stupas of the Sri Lanka∆s ancient sacred capital of Anuradhapura. Stupas are Buddhist sacred places of veneration, typically characterized by outstanding architectural shapes. From Geographical Magazine, Volume 2, c1920. Artist ENA.
