Australian Native Animals Return To Safety At Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary After Severe Flooding
BYRON BAY, AUSTRALIA - APRIL 09: Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary keeper Rachael Smith checks on the welfare of Mystique the Black-headed python in the safety of her environment after torrential rains flooded more than half of the Sanctuary grounds last week on April 09, 2024 in Byron Bay, Australia. Animals at the the not-for-profit wildlife sanctuary and veterinary hospital were evacuated to higher ground after more than 150mm (6 inches) of rain rushed into the popular tourism attraction, damaging fencing, animal habitats and vital equipment on Thursday, April 4th. Three days later, members of the community came out in force to help a major clean up and repair effort, donating time, equipment, food and goodwill. The Northern Rivers region is no stranger to floods, having been devastated by catastrophic region wide floods two years ago in February, 2022. The not-for-profit Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is seeking donations to repair and replace animal enclosures and vital infrastructure. (Photo by James D. Morgan/Getty Images)
