Three Decades Of Zulu Families Building Lives In An Alexandra Hostel
ALEXANDRA, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 21: An overview of the courtyard on May 21, 2024, in Madala Hostel in Alexandra Township, South Africa. Madala was built in 1972 for men that left the homelands to work in Johannesburg. Initially built for 5000 men it nowadays houses many more, and families and children. Traditionally an Inkatha Freedom Party stronghold, it has been the scene of many violent incidents in Alexandras history, and the majority of the residents are Zulu speaking. The residents dont pay rent and water and electricity is free when available. The neglect and appalling living conditions are striking and despite promises by the local government to renovate it and move the residents, nothing has change for these people.
