How do I provide clear context or details that are important?
Focus on what you want to see in your generated visuals: subject, medium, environment, lighting, color, mood, composition.
Do you have an image from your Generation History, a licensed image from our creative library, or your own image* you want to use for inspiration? Upload it as a Reference Image so the model can follow the color or composition in its generation.
*If you elect to upload an image, you will be prompted to confirm you own or hold a license to the image to ensure commercially safe generated images. Images uploaded as a Reference Image are not added to Getty Images’ creative library or used for AI model training. Supported files include JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP with a maximum file size limit of 30MB with a minimum dimension of 1024px.

Is there any overall guidance to prompt writing?
We suggest thinking of your prompt as two parts: natural language first; then add keywords, separated by commas. Include keywords that will reinforce the concept described in your natural‑language phrase.
Here’s an example:
A white cat sleeps on a blue textured pillow. It is a wide‑angle shot, and you can see the entire room. Cat, fluffy, pillow, texture, detail, interior, wide angle
If there is an image that you have in mind for color or composition, you can upload that as a Reference Image – from your Generation History, previously licensed from our creative library, or one that you own or have the license to use.

Is there any limit to how long my prompt can be?
Be descriptive, but concise. Try to keep your prompts 100 words or less. If your prompt is too long, the AI Generator will let you know, so you can adjust your prompts. If your prompt is too short (20 words or less), our prompt enhancer will help add keywords to get you closer to the image you want to generate.
I lost my previous session. How can I recover the prompts I last used?
Your prompt history is saved for 6 months. Please visit your Generation history to revisit prompts from previous sessions.
Can I save favorite prompts or frequently used prompts?

This feature gives you more control over your generated images by allowing you to preserve the overall composition and tone of the last 4 images you created. When activated, "Keep look & feel" applies minor visual updates based on small changes to the original prompt.
Note: if you make large changes to your original prompt or write a new one, the image generator will not be able to maintain the "look and feel" of your last generation.

How are these AI generated images made?
Generative AI by Getty Images is powered by Bria, a custom machine learning model, trained exclusively using high‑quality content and proprietary data, including Getty Images’ creative library. Customers then use text prompt‑to‑image generation to direct the model in creating imagery based on our content and data.
What is AI image generation?
AI image generation is the process of creating never‑before‑seen images using artificial intelligence (AI) technology trained on a large data set. Getty Images' AI Generator, powered by Bria, is trained exclusively on licensed content and proprietary data, and allows customers to enter text prompts that the AI model then uses to generate four unique images that are commercially safe and ready to license.
What is text prompt‑to‑image generation?
Text prompt‑to‑image generation lets you create unique images in seconds by describing the image that you want to see. The AI Generator will then generate visuals relevant to those prompts that can be used across your creative process, from ideation to execution.
How do I create an AI image prompt?
Once you have an active AI Generator agreement, open Getty Images’ AI Generator and type a description of what you want to generate into the text field provided. Your prompt can be up to 100 words long. The more details you provide, the better your results will be.

Can I generate AI images for free?
AI image generation on Getty Images is not free. Each generation uses one generation credit from your purchased Generative AI agreement. This ensures we can continue to support creators and artists on an ongoing basis by compensating them for allowing their work to be part of our AI model.
Are AI art generators illegal?
No, AI art or image generators are not illegal. However, the context in which they are trained, and the data used to train them can determine if their output respects legally protected intellectual property rights. Questions to consider:
That's why we are vigilant in ensuring our AI model is only trained on Getty Images' creative library and proprietary data. We put in place safeguards to significantly decrease the risk of generating problematic visuals, so the images you generate are immediately safe and cleared for commercial use.
- Was the AI model trained on data that did not have the proper permissions or artists' consent?
- Do any of the AI‑generated images infringe on copyright or other intellectual property rights like trademark or rights of publicity/privacy?

Can I sell AI‑generated art?

How do I use the AI Image Generator alongside the Getty Images creative library?
Like our creative library, the images created using our AI Generator are commercially safe. These one‑of‑a‑kind, high‑quality images are perfect for ideation and visualizing highly creative concepts that are more difficult to capture by traditional techniques. Creative images that you have previously licensed from Getty Images may be used as Reference Images to generate AI images that are similar in color or composition. Generated images can also be used to identify and find (via reverse image search) the pre‑shot visuals you need when the highest authenticity, realism, and resolution are required. Together, our creative library and Generative AI service offer powerful ways to discover the right visuals for your personal or commercial projects backed by the automatic inclusion of legal indemnification, for images generated.
What are Getty Images AI generations?
AI generations, or AI generation credits, grant you access to our AI Generator for generating new AI images and modifying images (your generated images or images from Getty Images’ creative library) using the Add, Remove, Extend, and Remove Background tools, as well as any additional features as we introduce them. Clicking “GENERATE” or “GENERATE MORE” creates a generation and counts toward your generation cap.
Can I use AI generations to license a creative image from Getty Images’ image library?
No, to license a creative image from Getty Images’ library, you will need to purchase an individual license, an UltraPack, or a Premium Access subscription. To find the best plan with the right price for your needs, visit our Plans and Pricing page or reach out to your representative.
What counts towards my generation cap?
A generation counts each time you select “GENERATE” or “GENERATE MORE”. This could be to generate a new image or to modify images by clicking “Modify with AI”. This includes images you create using our AI Generator, or the ones you modify from our creative library. In all instances, clicking “GENERATE” produces four new images, and your total number of used generations will decrease by 1. The current count and total number you have available can be found next to the “GENERATE” button.
How does the reference image capability work?
The Getty Images AI Generator console includes the ability to add a reference image to give you more precise control to influence the color or composition of your new generation. On the left side of the prompt bar, select "Add image," and choose "Add a reference image." From the module, you can add a reference image from your generation history, a licensed image from our creative library, or upload an image in the console.
Note: If you elect to upload an image, you will be prompted to confirm you own or hold a license to the image to ensure commercially safe generated images.

How does the Upload Product Photo feature work?
The Getty Images AI Generator allows you to upload your existing product image within the console and create new backgrounds that are tailored for your needs. Our AI technology removes the background automatically and allows you to adjust the product image size and position. Then, you can generate a new background scene while perfectly maintaining the uploaded object in the scene.
To start, select “Add image” from the left side of the prompt bar and choose “Upload product image.” Supported files include JPG, JPEG, PNG, and WebP with a maximum file size limit of 30MB. You will be prompted to confirm you own or hold a license to the image to ensure commercially safe generated images. Images uploaded are not added to Getty Images’ creative library or used for AI model training.
You then have a choice of how to generate a new background. You can write a prompt (default) or select the Background reference image option that allows you to choose a previously generated or licensed creative image, or upload a new image to guide your generation. Follow the onscreen instructions for your preferred method to create the background. The background won’t be an exact copy of the original reference image, but it will reflect its style and composition.
Once you generate a new background scene, you can further modify or refine the generated images by hovering over the preferred image thumbnail.

It looks like one of the generated images contains recognizable trademarks, logos, landmarks, or a public personality. Can I still use the image?
We’ve worked with our technology partner, Bria, to train a custom model exclusively on licensed content and proprietary data to create commercially safe outputs. This means we’ve taken care to block prompts that could generate problematic content including trademarks, logos, landmarks, or public personalities. Are there model releases for the people generated in the images?
Rest assured, the AI images you generate and license are backed by our legal indemnification, which is automatically included. Our Generative AI model is trained exclusively on licensed content and proprietary data, including the Getty Images creative library. The images of people may resemble real people, but they are generated likenesses rather than real people. If you require a visual with a model and/or property release, you should consider sourcing that visual from our high‑quality creative library.
What is Custom Fine‑Tuning?
Custom Fine‑Tuning is a service that helps you create a custom‑made version of our foundation model that understands your on‑brand visual style, and is only accessible by your users.
What are the different styles for which I can custom fine‑tune my dataset?

Is my custom fine‑tuned model commercially safe?
Our uncontaminated Getty Images base model, trained only on our creative library, provides an ideal foundation to train your custom model. Combining your dataset with our commercially safe base model should create commercially safe outputs, provided that your dataset also only contained commercially safe inputs. Please review your dataset with your legal team.
Can anyone else access my custom fine‑tuned model?
Your custom fine‑tuned model is architected for enterprise‑grade security, meaning your data and models are only accessible by you.
Can I use Getty Images content to fine‑tune a model?
You can build your brand visual dataset with content licensed from Getty Images’ creative images or via Custom Content to train a custom model.
