Jokulsarlon (Jökulsárlón) is the best known and largest of Iceland's proglacial lakes, located south of the Vatnajökull glacier, in the Vatnajökull National Park. The lake appeared between 1934 and 1935, formed by the melting of the glacier tongue of Breiðamerkurjökull. It is considered the deepest lake in Iceland with a maximum depth of 284 meters (as of 2009). The lake is a popular spot for tourist in the Route 1. It is well-known for the presence of icebergs drifting on the lake and joining the sea at Diamond Beach.
