School for Female Students in Kandahar, Afghanistan

The Zhargona Ana high school for girls in central Kandahar has been open for more than a month, teaching 1,050 girls from the age of seven to seventeen. Last month, Kandahar police tore down posters that had appeared around the city telling fathers their noses and ears would be cut off if they sent their daughters to school. In Afghanistans deeply conservative south, the struggle to educate thousands of girls who have never seen a school book only just began when the Taliban fell. Many remain deeply suspicious of sending their daughters to school. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)
