Calvin Insulted by the Libertines on the Rhone Bridge - stock illustration

The scene depicts the intense political and religious tensions to which the Reformer John Calvin was subjected in Geneva in the mid-16th century (particularly between 1546 and 1555). The so-called Libertines were a faction of established Geneva citizens and patriotic families. They radically opposed Calvin’s strict church discipline, his moral restrictions (such as bans on dancing and gambling), and the growing influence of French religious refugees in their city. The conflicts were not limited to the church walls or the Geneva Council. Calvin was regularly subjected to hostility, taunts, and physical intimidation by his opponents on the streets of Geneva. The confrontation on the Rhône Bridge (Pont du Rhône) symbolizes this psychological war of attrition. Despite this hostility and the constant threat of being banished from the city once again, Calvin ultimately succeeded in implementing his Reformation in Geneva. Wood engraving, published in 1899.
