Joe DiMaggio

(Original Caption) His glove held aloft against the background of a mural of the Yankee Stadium, Joe DiMaggio is shown as he announced his retirement from baseball in the New York Yankees office today. The 37 year old outfielder said: " I have played my last game of baseball... I feel that I have reached a stage where I no longer can produce for my ball club, my manager, my teammates and my fans the sort of baseball their loyalty to me deserves." DiMaggio told the News Conference that his plans for the future are indefinite, but it is expected that he will accept the Yankee offer of a job as television commentator for the club.
