Brazil Initiates Program To Eradicate Malnutrition

ACAUA, BRAZIL - FEBRUARY 15: A resident of Acaua carries water in a bucket on her head as she heads home with a child February 15, 2003 in Acaua, Brazil. Less than five percent of Acaua residents have running water or even toilets in their homes. Less than 20 percent have electricity. Acaua's population has one of the lowest incomes in Brazil, with approximately 87 percent of its residents living on less than U.S. 55 dollars a month. The area frequently suffers from drought as well. As a result of these conditions, Acaua was chosen by Brazil's government, along with three other comunities in the state of Piaul, to serve as an experiment for the implementation of a program known as "Zero Hunger," which is designed to, through a series of intiatives, eradicate malnutrition from Brazil.
