Brad Rust, a Soil Scientist for the Waldo Canyon BAER team, shovels dirt in a burned area to collect soil samples today July 10th, 2012. Burned Area Emergency Response or BAER teams have been dispatched onto the Waldo Canyon fire burn area. BAER teams, which are made up of soil scientists, hydrologists, engineers, archaeologists, biologists, and others, are used to assess the extent of the damage left from a fire, determine the soil burn severity, and help communities and residents make plans for dealing with flash floods in fire zones.
