The Art of Slowing Down

The importance of visualizing wellness

“Time flies.” “Where did the time go?” “In the blink of an eye.”

We have so many phrases to express the rapid passage of time—a telling indication of the underlying anxiety most people feel about the incessant pace of our modern lives. In today’s always‑connected digital culture—constant social media, 24‑hour news cycles, and the increasing blur between work and life—there is a rising awareness of the need to unplug and intentionally step away from the fray. Finding ways to slow down, to live in the moment, and focus more on personal fulfillment has become more crucial than ever.

This shifting desire for more analog and holistic experiences is being reflected in how people choose to spend their time. Our VisualGPS consumer survey finds that 44% of Americans choose to step away from tech and media‑centered entertainment to exercise, play a sport, or even just walk outdoors when feeling stressed to improve their mental health. Nearly a third also cite meaningful connection with loved ones and friends as a top priority and marker of success. Our findings also suggest that these values are especially relevant to men right now: Nine in 10 of American men think it is equally important to take care of themselves emotionally as well as physically. Yet male friendships are 32% less likely to be pictured than female friendships, and men are 48% less likely to appear in wellness visuals. This signals an opportunity to show men engaging in social activities that aren’t rooted in outdated, gendered notions of success and instead visualize realistic male well‑being more dynamically, infused with the depth and emotion people seek right now.

Creative collaboration to showcase simple pleasures

A recent customer request prompted a small but beautifully crafted photoshoot that aligned perfectly with these insights. They needed a specific visual story about two male friends on a day out fishing, enjoying the simple pleasures of laughter, conversation, and relaxation. Surprisingly, there was a lack of recent, relevant content, so we reached out right away to Jonny Long of Fly View Productions.

As ever, Jonny did not disappoint. The customer wanted a setting that evoked a hot summer day in the southern U.S., which was a challenge since Jonny is based in Oregon! But he knew of a river two hours outside Portland that had just the right look and feel. Two real‑life best friends were happy to participate in the shoot—though neither had fished since childhood. Fortunately, they managed the basics with their fishing rods and excelled at hanging out, sharing stories and a few (non‑alcoholic) beers, spending quality time together. The golden‑hour light and their genuine camaraderie resulted in a timeless series that celebrates bonding, friendship, trust, and well‑being—the kind of unplugged quality time that feels ever more essential today.

Unplug to unwind

Think about your best friends and your fondest memories, that day you played hooky together on a whim; the time you both laughed until you cried; that simple shared silence while watching the setting sun. Fly View Production’s shoot resonates with exactly these kinds of real human moments between true friends that we can all recognize and seek more of in both our media landscape as well as in our own lives. Through genuine storytelling and thoughtful imagery, we have the chance to reshape narratives and inspire more people to take a step back, unplug, and savor the art of slowing down.
