A Taste of Mexico: Food, Culture, and Connection

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Tacos, tamales, enchiladas, mole, pozole, chilaquiles: It is hard to know when to stop listing off Mexico’s incredible array of rich and delicious traditional dishes. Widely known as one of the best cuisines in the world, the Mexican gastronomy is so varied and exciting that people all over the world travel just to have a little taste of its flavors. Truly original and rooted in tradition, it reflects a culture in which food is a vehicle for bringing people together, building community, and forging new experiences and memories.

During the Create by Getty Images regional event in Mexico City, several creators took it upon themselves to explore the many layers of Mexico’s foodie scene and showcase why food is such an essential part of the country’s culture.

A day at the market
One of Mexico’s staples is its incredible food and artisanal markets. With countless stalls and options to choose from, navigating them can become a full day activity. In fact, Getty Images' VisualGPS research showcases that 42% of Mexicans find images of local cuisine at street‑food stalls more influential than those depicting sit‑down cafés, highlighting the visual appeal of these authentic culinary experiences.

That is exactly what creator Marcela Barsse wanted to capture when she headed to the street market in Tepoztlán, a small town beyond the outskirts of Mexico City. In her shoot, we follow two friends enjoying a slow, joyful day as they explore everything the market has to offer. The experience feels immersive and relatable as they try on clothes, admire traditional Mexican crafts and, of course, sample elotes, tacos, and several salsas with varying degrees of heat! The warm tones carried throughout the shoot also create a lovely, relaxed, and inviting atmosphere.

Street food and everyday moments
While markets are hubs for delectable food, they are not the only places where stalls can be found. It is very common to walk down almost any street in Mexico and cross paths with food trucks or carts catering to nearly every craving.

This everyday occurrence is what Gerardo Huitrón set out to portray on a sunny day in Polanco, one of Mexico City’s most prominent business and shopping districts. He followed two friends while they had a stroll around the neighborhood, shopping and stopping for food along the way. Their casual conversations and moments of connection make the shoot feel intimate and genuine, while close‑up shots of the tacos al pastor are the cherry on top, capturing the dish in such delicious detail that we can almost taste its rich, savory flavors.

From market stalls to the kitchen
While tourists travel from all over the world to sample Mexico’s exquisite cuisine, many are not satisfied with simply tasting it. They also want to learn how to prepare it with their own hands. Experiential tourism is on the rise, with VisualGPS research revealing that 92% of Mexicans find content focused on the travel journey influential. So, what better way to discover Mexican food than by taking a cooking class?

Ferrán Traite’s shoot perfectly captures this experience. The class begins at a food market, where a family of tourists is guided by an expert chef through stalls filled with fresh produce and aromatic spices. Along the way, they are encouraged to taste new ingredients and select those they will later use in the kitchen.

After this immersion in flavor, the cooking begins. Under the chef’s expert guidance, the participants prepare their meal while gaining fascinating insights into Mexico’s culinary traditions and secrets. The variety of angles used to capture the experience adds even more depth to the storytelling: Close‑ups highlight the colors and textures of the ingredients, wider shots capture the group’s shared experience, and point‑of‑view perspectives place us in the middle of the action. Together, these elements make the experience feel dynamic and deeply immersive. And what better way to end this sensory journey than by tasting the results? Gathered around the table, the family and chef share and enjoy the meal they created together.

From office hours to cocktail hour

Mexico’s food scene is not only rooted in tradition, it is also an essential part of the rhythm of every day, bringing people together long after the working day has ended. Restaurants and bars fill with friends and colleagues eager to unwind, share a drink, and enjoy the dynamic atmosphere that defines the city’s daily life.

In the lively neighborhood of Roma, creator Arturo Peña Romano Medina, followed four friends as they transition from work to an evening outing in an exclusive restaurant. Between tasty cocktails, shared dishes, and animated conversations, the shoot captures the effortless energy of an evening out in Mexico City. Close‑ups of drinks and food highlight sensory details, while wider shots reveal the stylish surroundings, and candid interactions put forward the group’s natural chemistry, creating a sophisticated yet genuine portrait of connection and city life.

From bustling markets and street‑food carts to hands‑on cooking classes and after‑work drinks, each shoot offers a different glimpse into Mexico’s rich culinary culture. Together, they show that food is about far more than flavor. It is a way to bring people together, celebrate tradition, and create lasting memories.
