Senator Murray says Government Cannot Wait to Act Against Zika

Washington Senator Patty Murray says at a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing to that we're all hearing from families concerned about the virus, welcoming the opportunity to get more facts. Murray says she wants to put politics aside to provide all the tools and resources into the effort to combat the virus. Saying the public health response is rapidly evolving, she notes that four in five who have contracted it showed no symptoms, saying that the same mosquito that carries the virus in South America can be found in any parts of the United States, including right outside our door on Capitol Hill. Murray says that given limitations in existing diagnostics and treatments, additional funding to accelerate research, effective lab tests, antiviral drugs, and a vaccine. Murray says that while a mosquito bite is the most likely way to contract Zika, news from Dallas the week before illustrates the need to understand that other means of transmission and whether there are any risks to the blood supply.
