Distant shots of the Tama New Town high-rise complex is seen. Jim Laurie of NBC News reports that in the high-rise developments like Tama New Town just west of Tokyo residents are experiencing the same problem of impersonality the suburban dwellers everywhere have felt. But, in Japan in government is hoping to do something about this through the medium of television. It launched an extensive experiment in cable TV. It will feature locally produced programming, designed to make the people of Tama feel more a part of the community. On one channel they get a local show to which they can call in on special phones. On other channels, you can punch up slides with recipes, medical advice messages from neighbors, etc. Pictures are shown of the experimental television station headquarters and the control room, with technicians at work.
