HODA KOTB: I love that show. Now this real life mom is chasing down her naughty TV kids and hunting down bad guys as detective Laura Diamond on the new NBC show The Mysteries of Laura. Take a look. (Excerpt from Will & Grace) (Excerpt from The Mysteries of Laura) HODA KOTB: I like it. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Love it-- love it. HODA KOTB: Come on. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You're having fun. DEBRA MESSING (The Mysteries of Laura): I am. I Really, really I'm having a lot of fun. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: So when you read-- I didn't realize Hoda, did you know that this is based on a show by the same name from Spain. DEBRA MESSING: Yeah it's a huge hit in Spain. It's been there-- it's been there for about three years now. And so, yeah. It's kind of like Homeland where they-- it was successful over-- over-- the other side of the world-- (Cross talking) DEBRA MESSING: --and they're like okay let's try and bring it in here and we're having a ball-- HODA KOTB: So clearly, there's-- there's comedy in it, which you're-- DEBRA MESSING: There is. HODA KOTB: --which you love, but there's drama as well. There's some serious stuff in there too. DEBRA MESSING: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: How would you categorize it. DEBRA MESSING: I mean, we call it a dramedy. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. DEBRA MESSING: You know, this-- this hasn't really been done on network television, an hour long dramedy, which is the thing that made me so excited about giving it a go. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: New-- new lane to-- yeah. DEBRA MESSING: And, you know, I love really smart twisty murder mysteries in which this has every episode. And then you have the, you know, the broad comedy also and finding that balance. That's the real challenge. And we're having a ball. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Well, that's a challenge in life for you as well because you have got a ten-year-old son. DEBRA MESSING: Yes. HODA KOTB: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: But you seem to be a perennial here at NBC. I tell you, something is going on there, huh? DEBRA MESSING: You know, I have been around so long I guess, you know, I should get some shares or something, right? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: By stock-- by stock. HODA KOTB: Now tonight is the premier of the show, right? DEBRA MESSING: Yes. HODA KOTB: And how do you feel on premier night? How does that feel the night before? DEBRA MESSING: I'm so-- I'm-- I'm giddy. I'm nervous. I'm excited. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: What will you do? DEBRA MESSING: I'm proud. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: How do you spend it? DEBRA MESSING: I'm going to-- I'm going to cuddle up in bed and watch it because it's right after America's love (sic) Talent. HODA KOTB: America's Got Talent. DEBRA MESSING: Got Talent, yeah the big finale. So I'm just going to-- I'm just going to stay in there and I'm going to tweet. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Great. HODA KOTB: To-- to learn how to be a police officer, which was part of this or detectives. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You did your research. HODA KOTB: Yeah, you-- you went on ride alongs, didn’t you? DEBRA MESSING: I did. HODA KOTB: Did you like that? DEBRA MESSING: I did. I-- you know. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Fascinated. DEBRA MESSING: I've been fascinated with the judicial system forever. HODA KOTB: Yeah. DEBRA MESSING: And, you know, these are special, special people who commit their lives to-- to this kind of work. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You wouldn’t always know that by lot of the press. DEBRA MESSING: No. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: You know, I'm-- I'm always grateful there's a police person around when I'm in trouble-- when something is going on, you know, you want help. DEBRA MESSING: Yeah and we got to go in and-- and to the precinct and we got to interview them and the thing that was most fascinating was how much humor plays a part in their daily lives. HODA KOTB: Interesting. Stress release. DEBRA MESSING: They said that what they see every day is so horrendous that they have to joke with each other. HODA KOTB: Right. DEBRA MESSING: And so in that way it made me feel even better about, you know, the dynamic in our TV show to having both co-exist. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Because it's real. DEBRA MESSING: It's real. HODA KOTB: Should we spin the wheel. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. HODA KOTB: Should we spin the wheel? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah. Time to spin the wheel. HODA KOTB: Spin the bottle. That’s what we play here. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yeah, we don't know what it is, but it's fun. We don’t even wait for it to land sometimes. (Cross talking) DEBRA MESSING: Do I kiss one of you? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yes. What's the one thing you do when no one is looking? HODA KOTB: What's the one thing you do when no one is looking? That's creepy. Who wrote that? DEBRA MESSING: I-- I sing at the top of my lungs. HODA KOTB: You do? DEBRA MESSING: Oh, yeah. HODA KOTB: Do you have a good voice? DEBRA MESSING: I used to. HODA KOTB: You did. DEBRA MESSING: I did. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Yes, you did. DEBRA MESSING: I did. HODA KOTB: What do you sing at the top-- DEBRA MESSING: Not so much anymore. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Whiskey and sailors and cigarettes. DEBRA MESSING: Yeah. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: It's all over. DEBRA MESSING: I sing-- I sing-- God I'll sing Barbara Streisand. I'll sing-- KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Let's go out on that. HODA KOTB: Yes, what should we sing? KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Go ahead. HODA KOTB: We'll do it here, I'll join in. DEBRA MESSING: No, the whole point was when people are not looking. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Oh. That’s right. That was the question. HODA KOTB: The Mysteries of Laura premiers tonight at ten, nine Central, right here on NBC.
