It is impounded by Shasta Dam, the ninth tallest dam in the United States. The outflow of Shasta Dam provides electricity, drinking, and irrigation water. It also provides flood control below the dam for the Sacramento Valley. It has a capacity of 4,552,000 acre feet at full pool, and a surface area of 30,000 acres, making it California's largest reservoir. It is located ten miles (16km) north of Redding.
