Poinsett Bridge 5 - stock photo

Poinsett Bridge, a 14 foot Gothic arch stone structure, is believed to be the oldest surviving bridge in the state of South Carolina. Named after Joel Poinsett, a prominent early resident of Greenville, South Carolina and a United States ambassador to Mexico, the bridge stretches 130 feet over Little Gap Creek and once connected Charleston and Columbia with the North Carolina mountain communities into Tennessee. Historians believe it was designed by Robert Mills, architect of the Washington Monument.
