People at Kaminarimon Gate, Sensoji Temple, Tokyo

Sensoji Temple is the most popular and colorful temple in Tokyo, located in Asakusa, and many people visit throughout the year, rain or shine. According to the legend, two fishermen brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the Goddess of mercy, out of Sumida River in the year 628. The temple was built to house the Goddess of Kannon in 645, the oldest in Tokyo.Visitors to the temple enter through Kaminari-mon (Thunder Gate), the outer gate, and walk through Nakamise, a shopping street of over 200 meters, flanked by many shops selling typical Japanese souvenirs and local snacks and then reach the second gate, Hozomon (Treasure House Gate). Beyond the gate stand temple's Main Hall and Five Storied Pagoda. Various events take place in the temple area with Sanja Matsuri (Shrine Festival) in May being the most famous among them.
